“Hey, name’s Theresa. It’s nice to meet you.”
“Back at ya! You can call me Andy or McNally. I’m used to both. So, what’s your story?”
“Hey there! Names Lainey, nice to meet you!”
“Nice to meet you too, Lainey! Glad there’s still some friendly people around even though the world falling apart. My name’s Andy. I’m a cop… or was a cop anyway.” Andy was trying to hold herself together but her emotions were tugging her in opposite directions. For the first time since she had left Memphis, she felt safe. However, Andy knew better. This was only an illusion of safety. Soon enough, they would have to abandon this safe haven like all the others but for tonight she and Sam didn’t have to take shifts sleeping. She put her poker face back on and continued her conversation with Lainey.
“My boyfriend, Sam, is wandering around somewhere. He likes to scope out his surroundings. How did you find your way here?”

The Police could no longer handle the chaos that was consuming the city. Their only hope was to take what they could and get to a safer area. The remaining officers had been living in the station with their loved ones since the outbreak because they thought it was the most secure place to hold up. That was no longer the case. They decided in order for everyone to stand their best shot against these cannibalistic walkers they would divide the guns, ammo and any other supplies from the gun locker and evidence locker between those who stuck around.
“We can’t take anything out of evidence! What’s gonna happen when this is all over?! How are we going to explain—” Sam Swarek cut Diaz off before he could go any further about protocol.
“DIAZ! Would you shut the fuck up! This may not end. And we have be prepared to do anything we can to keep ourselves and other survivors alive. We need to get out there and serve, protect, and kill those fucking walkers! Are you with me?”
“Sam, we need to focus on finding a safe place to regroup before we go out there guns blazing” Andy rationalized.
The group gathered their supplies and packed their cars. Luckily, the station had extra gas cans so they packed those in as well. Andy and Sam were together in his Bronco because it was more versatile than their police cruiser. The rest of the group followed behind Swarek and McNally in their vehicles. They were barely out of the Police station with their small caravan of survivors when all Hell broke loose. People were being trampled, buildings were being looted and people were killing each other for supplies while others were being killed by the walkers. Everyone on the street looked so crazed that it was difficult to tell who was an average person and who was a walker. Andy stared out the window in disbelief while Sam tried to navigate his way out of the city.
“Looks like we’re getting out of here just in the nick of time.” Sam tried to joke to release some tension but Andy could see terror pulsing through him.
Things got out of control and Swarek and McNally were separated from the rest of the group. They had agreed on a meeting place if things went wrong so Andy and Sam went there and waited. When the rest of the group didn’t show, they tried them on their CB radios and walkie-talkies but all they got was static. They even went back to try to find them but the rest of the group was nowhere to be found.
Being a cop, Andy knew how to deal with loss but this was different.Gone. Everything and everyone she had ever known and loved was gone. Everyone but Sam. He was her rock, the one person who could keep her calm no matter what was happening but then again they had never encountered anything like this. Not knowing who was dead or who was still alive was eating away at her like the walkers that had taken over the world she used to know. She knew only one thing of certainty anymore— Sam would do anything to protect her and she would do anything to protect him.
